The Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM, Chairman Han Ki Jun) announced on December 7, that the company has held a completion ceremony for the restoration project of the tidal mudflat ecosystem of Muchangpo Dakbeoseul Island in Ungcheon-eup, Boryeong-city. The completion ceremony was attended by Kim Tae Heum, Chairman of the Agriculture, Food, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Committee; Hwang Jong-woo, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries; Kim Dong Il, Mayor of Boryeong City; Park Geum Soon, chairman of the Boryeong City Council; as well as local residents

The restoration project has invested 3.68 billion won to solve problems such as blocking seawater distribution due to the linking land stone system connecting Dakbeoseul Island, changes in sedimentation in surrounding mudflats, and deterioration of marine species diversity. It also aims to improve the health of the ecosystem in the tidal mudflat of Muchangpo.

The corporation received approval for the basic plan in 2018, and started the project after getting implementation and approval for the basic and implementation design in 2019. It has completed △the construction of a sandy tidal mudflat on the south coast of Dakbeoseul Island; △the removal of the linking land stone system; and △the installation of linking land bridge for seawater distribution. The corporation plans to continue monitoring for the next five years.

"We would like to express our gratitude to the local residents for their cooperation in the restoration as part of the Green New Deal project.", said Yoo Sang Joon, Executive director of the Marine Conservation Division. "We ask for your further attention and support in the tidal mudflat ecosystem restoration project in the future."
