Purpose of establishment

In accordance to Article 97 of the Marine Environment Management Act, KOEM’s goals are centered around efficiently promoting the conservation, management, and improvement of the marine environment, as well as marine pollution control. Thus, KOEM strives to contribute towards realizing a green future by establishing a clean and rich marine environment.

Established basic plans for marine development
(OK-21, jointly with 13 government agencies, May 2000)Promoted the establishment of
the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM)
for the carrying out of work related to marine environment preservation. -
Established 2001-2005 comprehensive plans for
marine environment conservation (Prime Minister Water
Quality Improvement Group, April 2001)Reorganized the Korea Marine Pollution Response Corporation (KMPRC) and expanded
its function as the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM) -
Enacted Marine Environment Management Law
(January 19, 2007)Established KOEM for the conservation, management, and improvement of
the marine environment, marine pollution control, development of
related technologies, and the implementation of education & training projects
(Article 97 of the Marine Environment Management Law)
