Establishment of the Korea Marine Pollution Response Corporation,
the parent of the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation, in November 1997.

    • Launch of the promotion committee of the Korea Marine Pollution Response Corporation(KMPRC)
    • The Korea Marine Pollution Response Corporation(KMPRC) is established and begins operation

    The Korea Marine Pollution Response Corporation(KMPRC) was established in November 1997 with the purpose to conserve the national marine environment. Accordingly, KMPRC becomes Korea’s first marine environment organization to protect and systematically conserve our oceans.

    • Government undertakes the management of vessel waste oil storage facilities
    • Government assumes management of port clean up project, and acquisition of the tugboat project form the Korea Container Terminal Authority

2000's

In a 2001 management assessment by the Ministry of Maritime Affair and Fisheries,
KMPRC was selected the Organization of Excellence.

    • Implements unused-warship refloating operation
    • Implements sunken waste collection project and professional education
    • Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Japanese Marine Disaster Prevention Center(MDPC)

    The Korea Marine Pollution Response Corporation(KMPRC) implements various marine environment control projects to spur growth: an in-water waste deposit collecting project and a professional training program. In addition, KMPRC successfully implements the warship refloating operation, and signs an MOU with the Japanese Marine Disaster Prevention Center(MDPC).

    • In a 2001 management assessment by the Ministry of Maritime Affair and Fisheries, KMPRC was selected the Organization of Excellence.
    • Implemented disaster relief project for areas damaged by Typhooon Lusa

    The Korea Marine Pollution Response Corporation(KMPRC) position itself as a specialized organization in the control sector through achieving a rating of “Excellent” in a management assessment by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. In addition, it implemented disaster relief project for areas damaged by Typhoon Lusa.

    • Signed the Marine control operating agreement with local governments
    • Filed patents for control technologies
    • The Korea Marine Pollution Response Corporation (KMPRC) signs marine control operation agreements with municipalities and becomes the leader of marine environment management in Korea.

    KMPRC successfully develops technology for effectively processing marine oil spills and files for patent applications, thus spurring the development of control technologies.

    • Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation(KOEM)is established and begins operation

    The Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM) officially launches in January 2008 and a new era in marine environment conservation begins. As the one and only marine environment management organization in Korea, KOEM begins to build the future of our oceans.

2010's

In May 2018, Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation changed appellations to Korea Marine Environment Corporation in order to
advance into an organization that provides public services centered on the citizens.

    • Establishment of Marine Environment Research & Training Institute

    In an innovation cluster in Busan, the Marine Environment Research & Training Institute is established to undertake education on control of marine pollution. KOEM established professional education courses on the marine environmental issued by providing filed ?experience education programs utilizing an artificial marine & wave basin.

  • 2011~2012
    • Commenced Marine Environmental Survey

    For preservation and management of Korea’s marine ecosystem, KOEM has been performing Basic Coastal Wetland Survey and Marine Sanctuary Investigation and Monitoring operations since 2011. In 2012, KOEM started the Basic Marine Ecosystem Survey project to identify the characteristics and changes in marine ecosystem of all waters, as well as coastal (mudflats) and marine ecosystem protection zones across the country.

  • 2013
    • Installed Marine Radioactive Material Monitoring Center

      Marine Radioactive Material Monitoring Center was established in December 2013. KOEM has secured professional human resources and latest radioactive material analysis equipment and to conduct quarterly surveys on artificial radionuclides (cesium, plutonium) in coastal areas across the country.

    • Promoted Management of Submerged Vessels

    In order to prevent the damage caused by marine accidents and marine environmental pollution, KOEM started a project to systematically and scientifically investigate and manage submerged vessels and safely recover remaining oil from the vessels.

  • 2016
    • Designated as National Marine Environmental Training Center

    In March 2016, KOEM was designated as a national marine environmental training center by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. KOEM has been contributing to improving the citizens’ awareness of the marine environment by organizing mobile educational classes, promoting cooperation with educational institutions and instructors, and distributing educational materials.

  • 2017
    • Designation as National Greenhouse Gas Statistics Compilation Agency in Maritime and Fisheries Field

    In April 2017, KOEM was designated as a national greenhouse gas statistics compilation agency in the maritime and fisheries field. KOEM has since been leading the marine ecosystem-based greenhouse gas management by establishing a climate change response system and discovering new greenhouse gas reduction measures.

  • 2018
    • Changed Name to Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation

    In May 2018, Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation changed appellations to Korea Marine Environment Corporation in order to advance into an organization that provides public services centered on the citizens.

  • 2019
    • Establishment of the Marine Environment Research Institute

    The Marine Environment Research Institute, a marine environment survey and research facility, was established in the innovation district in Dongsam-dong, Busan. It is operated to support the establishment of marine environment policies based on data accumulated through the operation of the cutting-edge experimental facility in the marine environment field that can measure and analyze the pollution level of seawater and sediments and investigate the marine ecosystem. Also, such data is open for the public to be processed and used freely.

    • Assigned as the Marine Healing Management Group

    The public corporation has been assigned as a Marine Healing Group in line with the "Act on the Management and Utilization of Marine Healing Resources" and is supporting the vitalization of the Marine Healing Industry.

    • Forming a marine radiation monitoring group

    To examine the status of marine radioactivity in the coastal region, the public corporation is implementing a marine radioactive substance measurement network project with qualified personnel and equipment for environmental radioactivity investigation.

  • 2022
    • Commissioning a multi-purpose large-scale water surface cleaner

    The public corporation constructed Endam, a multi-purpose disaster response vessel of the 5,000-ton class, capable of immediate deployment and oil recovery in the event of large-scale maritime pollution catastrophes and harsh weather.
