National Marine ecosystem Monitoring Program

For the efficient management of the marine ecosystem, KOEM is strengthening the foundation and systems for marine ecosystem monitoring. KOEM has established a basic plan for general marine ecosystem monitoring, and thus stably administers a general diagnosis on the marine ecosystems in all areas ranging from monitoring and investigation to examination, assessment, policy development, and P.R. In addition, having established the Marine Environment Monitoring and Research Center in 2019, KOEM strives to activate the marine environment and ecosystem diagnosis and cooperation system with the related industrial, academic, and research sectors and to create synergy through the cooperation.

Project objectives

To systematically and comprehensively grasp the characteristics and changes of the Korean marine ecosystem, KOEM integrated investigations* that had been completed separately and is now seasonally conducting National Marine ecosystem Monitoring Program at 1,071 points around Tidal flat, coasts, and adjacent seas. The investigation cycle has been shortened in order to promptly notice shifts in the marine ecosystem(from 5-8 years to 2 years).

* Basic investigation of marine ecosystem, Basic investigation of coasts and marshes, Observation of Marine Protected Areas, Investigation of marine biodiversity
