International Cooperation

KOEM is propelling international cooperation through the global network in order to establish a management system for a sustainable marine environment and is taking part in international efforts for preservation of the marine environment by enhancing our capability to respond to international issues.
Our Goals
To improve national interest through effective response to international marine environment issues and to enhance KOEM’s status as a professional organization devoted to international cooperation in marine affairs.

National Projects Promoting International Collaboration to Protect the Marine Environment
Establish government measures related to international agreements, regional seas programmes, bilateral/multilateral consultative bodies and supporting the government’s marine diplomatic activities
- Handle meetings for the Korea-China/Japan/Russia Joint Committee on Environmental Cooperation, Korea-U.S. Environmental Affairs Council/Environmental Cooperation Commission, Korea-Japan Environmental policy meeting
- Handle Multilateral Environmental Agreements
- Support government responses to international organizations and regional councils such as PEMSEA, NOWPAP, YSLME, COBSEA, APEC, and ASEAN
Marine environment International Cooperation Projects
Provide support to developing nations and develop/implement new marine environment / oil spill response projects
- Provide developing nations with support concerning marine environmental issues and pollution preparedness through domestic and international funds such as KOICA ODA, UNDP, ASEAN, APEC, and IMO
- Conduct joint projects in areas of marine litter, climate change, water quality, and marine ecosystems through various consultation channels such as the Korea-China/Japan/Russia Joint Committee on Environmental Cooperation and the Korea-Japan Marine Environment policy meeting
- Provide international oil spill response consultation and uncover new projects for expanding cooperation to protect the Arctic
Building International Cooperation Networks
International cooperation for oil spill response
- Share oil spill response systems and technologies by participating in IMO, IOPC Funds, ARF, NOWPAP MERRAC Focal point meetings, and RITAG
- Build cooperative networks with advanced nations in pollution preparedness and response by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with advanced overseas organizations such as SMIT in the Netherlands, CEDRE in France, MDPC in Japan, and COES in China
- Participate in the Arctic Partnership Week and the Korea Arctic Research Consortium (KoARC)
International collaboration for conserving the marine environment
- Build partnerships and carry out cooperative projects with international organizations and overseas institutes, such as the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA), the Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands (VASI), The Institute of Oceanology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS), Cambodia (The Ministry of Environment), and the Pacific Oceanological Institute in Russia (POI)
