Management of Sunken Vessel

Sunken vessels can become barriers for other vessel’s navigation and the residual oil can leak due to corrosion of the vessel’s body, which harms the neighboring fisheries and farms. KOEM systematically manages information on sunken vessels with the aid of the disaster management system of Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. We evaluate and manage the potential risks of sunken vessels based on video exploration of the actual sea area. For high-risk sunken vessels, we prevent secondary marine accidents by lifting the sunken vessels out or removing their residual oil.
Current Status of Sunken Vessel Management
KOEM has conducted a yearly on-site investigation since 2015 in order to understand the potential risks of sunken vessels. As a result of this risk assessment, a total of 76 vessels were designated as target vessels for investigation.
