Restoration of Marine Ecosystem
Systematic Management of the Ecosystem KOEM aims to restore marine biodiversity and create a healthy marine ecosystem by improving and restoring the habitat function of the marine ecosystem damaged during the past land development process. We are improving the habitat function of Dokdo Island's marine ecosystem, improving the habitat environment of spotted seals on Baengnyeong Island and corals and seaweeds on Jeju Island and the southern coast of Korea.
Restoration of Marine Protected Species and habitats
KOEM takes the investigation of current inhabitation status of marine protected species, develops technologies for artificial proliferation, and conducts projects for improvement of habitats. KOEM is the preservation institution for systematic management of protected species and the network center of rescue and cure organizations.
Moon Jellyfish Polyp Removal Project
The mass reproduction of moon jellyfish disturbs the marine ecosystem and habitats. KOEM has been designated as the official institution in charge of extracting and removing the polyps of the moon jellyfish, conducting relevant projects every year.
Removing and Managing Spartina spp.
After its introduction was first reported at Ganghwado Island, Spartina spp. has rapidly proliferated and devastated Korea’s native ecosystem. KOEM has made efforts to remove and manage Spartina spp. by grasping its current distribution, removing its roots and stems, and conducting test-bed studies.
