Responding to Marine Climate Change

The ocean is facing various changes like temperature rise, acidification, and sea level rise, caused by the increase of CO2. To minimize the risk, KOEM is conducting various tasks including checking greenhouse gases emission in marine and fisheries division (marine, fisheries, shipping, harbor), newly digging out carbon sink(blue carbon), and seeking international cooperation against climate change.

Constructing Response System to Climate Change in Marine and Fisheries Division

  • System of measuring and
    managing GHG emission
    • Measuring and reporting GHG emission
    • Managing the quality of GHG stats
    • Constructing foundation for management system for GHG emission stats in marine and fisheries division
  • Constructing Foundation for
    GHG Reduction
    • Development of new carbon sinks and receipt of international certificate
    • Constructing foundation for GHG emissions trading
    • Constructing foundation for management system for GHG emission stats in marine and fisheries division
  • Strengthening International Cooperation
    and Government Policy Support
    • Response to international regulations related to climate change including UNFCCC, IPCC
    • Support for settling comprehensive plan for handling climate change in marine and fisheries division and assessing the performance
    • Constructing the monitoring system for marine climate change

Management of Blue Carbon

KOEM is undertaking research on blue carbon, a substance that is catching attention as a carbon sink. We are pursuing the innovative reduction of GHG using the marine ecosystems and obtain international certification and making efforts to build the national inventory.

Blue Carbon

Blue carbon is the carbon captured by the marine ecosystem by means of coastal plants and deposits.
The marine ecosystem has the smaller land area than the forest on the ground, but it absorbs a similar amount of carbon and its absorbing speed is up to 50 times higher, so it is getting attention as a new GHG sink.
