KOEM Participates in 14th RITAG Meeting

A delegation from the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM) attended the 14th meeting of the Regional Industry Technical Advisory Group (RITAG), which was held for three days starting on September 4 in Indonesia. RITAG has been hosting annual workshops on pollution prevention for nongovernmental agencies in Asia since 2010 to promote exchanges and coordinate preparations for and responses to marine pollution events.

The delegation’s presentation on South Korea’s marine pollution preparedness, policy progress on building a response system, and success recovering residual oil spilled from eight ships that sank between 2019 and 2024 received an enthusiastic response from the audience.

The Singaporean and Philippine delegations also shared their experiences with marine pollution events. The Japanese delegation discussed their response system for hazardous and noxious substance (HNS) spills and fuel transfers. The Indonesian and Thai delegations also presented their cases for preparing against, and responding to, oil spills and other chemical accidents.

RITAG facilitates exchanges between member organizations via its website (http://ritag.org), to share major issues, as well as under memoranda of understanding on personnel exchanges among delegations.
Commenting on the event, KOEM CEO Yongseok Kang said, “The latest meeting has broadened our understanding of new types of marine pollution events. Going forward, we will continue to work with organizations in Korea and abroad to strengthen our preparedness and responses against complex marine crises.”
