The Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM) announced that its hosted the fourth SCAT Capability-Enhancing Workshop at the Marine Environment Research and Training Institute (MERTI) in Yeongdo, Busan, from September 23 through 24, 2024.

SCAT (shoreline clean-up assessment technology) is a technology that investigates instances of marine pollution and designs the optimum clean-up process.

The workshop was held to enhance the capabilities of clean-up officers at KOEM’s branches nationwide by sharing best practices of shoreline cleanup assessment reports. The workshop attracted attendees from KOEM’s headquarters, its 12 branches, the Korea Coast Guard and Yeongdo-gu Office.

The chosen presenters introduced their best-practice cases and answered questions from the audience. First prize went to the Ulsan branch, and second prize was shared between the Incheon and Busan branches. The Masan, Donghae, and Mokpo branches received participation prizes.

KOEM CEO Yongseok Kang explained, “This year’s workshop has given us an opportunity to establish a foundation for diversifying our responses to complex marine pollution events based on our experiences and expertise.”
