KOEM Hosts the 14th Korea’s Marine Protected Areas Days in Seocheon, Chungcheongnam-do

Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM, CEO Han Ki-jun) announced on October 14 that it host the 114th Korea’s Marine Protected Areas Days.

The event is sponsored by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and hosted by KOEM, Chungcheongnam-do Province, and Seocheon-gun County. It will be live online (YouTube channel Yojeum Seocheon) and minimize in-person participants to the spread of COVID-19.

To celebrate the registration of Korean mud flats as a World Natural Heritage site in July, the event this year will take place under the theme, “Korean Mud Flats in the World.” The event will feature Marine Protection Area Puzzle Performance and National Video Contest (on Seocheon Mud Flat World Natural Heritage Videos) winners.

Marine Protected Areas are designated to promote sustainable use of marine resources while conserving marine ecosystems. A total of 31 Marine Protected Areas (1,798) are designated and maintained in Korea. plans to increase the number of areas to 34 by 2022.

Yoo Sangjoon, KOEM’s Marine Conservation Division Executive Director, said, “With a heightened level of interest on Korean Marine Protected Areas since the World Natural Heritage designation of Korean mud flats in Gochang, Seocheon, Suncheong, Boseong, and Sinan, the Corporation will make its best effort to develop world-class Marine Protected Areas.
