On October 29, the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM; CEO: Han Ki-jun) announced that it had constructed and delivered a new four-ton response vessel to the Port of Daesan to support the early response to and prevention of marine pollution.
The vessel, Chong-jung 16, is 9.52 meters long and 3.3 meters wide. Made from marine-grade aluminum, it has outstanding maneuverability and a maximum speed of approximately 32 knots (59km/h) and is equipped with an eco-friendly (solar battery) charging system.
Because of the high tide in the region and numerous low-water areas, the Port of Daesan is prone to maritime accidents. The Chong-jung 16 is expected to improve the port’s early disaster response capability and make it easier to transport disaster control materials and manpower to accident sites.
Executive director Chang-hyun Park of KOEM’s Department of Marine Pollution Response said, “With the Chong-jung 16, the Port of Daesan can now not only conduct rapid marine pollution response, but also effectively prevent leaks and other contamination-related accidents. KOEM will continue making every effort to secure new response vessels for maritime accident-prone regions in order to keep Korea’s seas clean.”
